Retro Rouse 2017

Eddie Merkx

Welcome to Retro Velo , a blog I started to share, review and admire all things cycling from the pre- lycra, pre- carbon fibre, pre 1990’s era of riding and racing in New Zealand and the rest of the world.

A great example of this was an event a few fellow aficionados and I recently put together in Auckland, aptly called Retro Rouse. It was just amazing to see the fantastic collection of bikes and jerseys all in one room of what must be a first for New Zealand.

There was an amazing turn out for an event in its first year, especially with only a few months of planning to put it together.

Have a look at this video from ‘The Ride’ , which captures the day brilliantly.

With so many people on the day admiring the bikes, many commented they wished they had brought their own vintage steel frame bike along to the show and we are certain, that next year will be an even bigger event and hope to get organizing on this very soon.

We had everything from vintage Merckx to Colnago, from Battaglin to Moser. There was also a great selection of vintage woolen cycling jerseys, most notably perhaps a maglia rosa in honor of the current Giro d’Italia.
